LGBTQ Therapist In Maryland
Affirming Therapy for Queer & Trans Communities
Finding a therapist who truly gets it can feel impossible. Maybe you've sat across from someone who nodded politely but didn't understand what it's like to navigate a world that wasn't built for you. Maybe you've had to explain microaggressions, code-switching, or the weight of existing at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities. Maybe you're just tired of being the educator in the therapy room when you came there to heal.
“You deserve care from someone who sees your full humanity.”
Therapy with context,
care, and culture.
As a queer Black Caribbean immigrant woman and licensed therapist, I understand what it means to move through spaces where your identity is questioned, dismissed, or tokenized. Here at Life Migration Therapy, you don't have to explain what it feels like to be the only one in the room. This space was designed for you.
I'm Charika White, LICSW, LCSW-C, and I provide affirming, trauma-informed therapy for LGBTQ+ adults across Maryland. Whether you're in Silver Spring, Baltimore, Rockville, or Prince George's County, I offer virtual telehealth services tailored to meet your individual needs.

What Makes Therapy LGBTQ+ Affirming?
Affirming therapy isn't just about tolerance. It's not about a therapist saying "I'm okay with gay people" and calling it a day.
True affirmative therapy celebrates who you are and centers your lived experience without pathologizing your identity or relationships.
In affirming therapy, your sexual orientation, gender identity, and the way you show up in the world are never treated as problems to fix.
Instead, we focus on the challenges you're actually facing: anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, relationship struggles, or the emotional toll of living in a society that often invalidates queer and trans existence.
When you work with an LGBTQ+ friendly therapist who has specialized training and extensive training in gender dysphoria, identity exploration, and the unique mental health concerns of the LGBTQ+ community, you get more than just acceptance. You get a supportive environment where you can explore your authentic self without fear of judgment. You get unconditional positive regard. You get a therapy room where your feelings are heard and your struggles are understood in their full context.
Healing Looks Different for Everyone.
Here's What It Felt Like for Them.
Therapy for Queer, Trans, and Nonbinary Clients in Maryland
I work with LGBTQ+ adults navigating a wide variety of concerns. Whether you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender, nonbinary, intersex, or anywhere along the spectrum of gender and sexuality, you're welcome here.
I also enjoy working with individuals who are questioning, exploring, or simply trying to find language for who they are.
Here are some of the common issues I help clients address:
Coming out and identity exploration:
Whether you're coming out to yourself, your family, or the world, this process can bring up complex feelings of fear, grief, relief, and joy. We'll create space for all of it.
Family acceptance and relationships:
Navigating family dynamics when your identity isn't fully accepted can be exhausting. We'll work on setting boundaries, building resilience, and finding ways to honor yourself while deciding what relationships deserve your energy.
Minority stress and emotional well being:
Living as a marginalized person takes a toll. The constant vigilance, the microaggressions, the erasure—it all adds up. Together, we'll develop tools to protect your mental health while building a sustainable path forward.
Relationship dynamics and couples therapy:
Whether you're navigating a queer relationship, dealing with internalized homophobia, or facing challenges around communication and connection, I provide individual therapy and couples therapy to help you build the relationships you want.
Depression, anxiety, and trauma:
LGBTQ+ individuals face higher rates of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health disorders due to systemic oppression and past experiences of rejection or violence. We'll address these concerns using evidence-based treatment approaches like CBT, DBT, TF-CBT, and EMDR.
Gender dysphoria and transition support:
If you're navigating gender dysphoria, considering or undergoing transition, or simply trying to live authentically in a world that often assigns rigid expectations based on sex assigned at birth, I'm here to provide knowledgeable, compassionate support.
Eating disorders, ADHD, and other co-occurring concerns:
LGBTQ+ individuals often face higher rates of eating disorders, ADHD, and other psychological challenges. We'll take a holistic approach to address all aspects of your well being.
Why Choose a Queer Therapist of Color?
As a queer therapist who's also Black, Caribbean, and an immigrant, I bring lived experience to this work that goes beyond completed training or specialized training. I've navigated the same intersections you have. I know what it's like to move through a world that tries to box you into one identity at a time, never acknowledging the fullness of who you are.
This isn't just about cultural competence—it's about shared understanding. It's about not having to translate your humanity. It's about working with someone who understands that your struggles aren't just individual—they're also systemic. And it's about building a therapeutic relationship rooted in empathy, connection, and the kind of trust that only comes when someone truly gets it.
I've dedicated my career to serving communities that have been historically marginalized by traditional mental health services. Whether you're navigating identity, dealing with the emotional toll of discrimination, or simply trying to find your way in a world that wasn't designed with you in mind, I'm here to walk that journey with you.
Let me be real with you: finding a queer Black immigrant therapist is like finding a unicorn.
That's what one of my clients told me, and it's true. There aren't many of us out here doing this work, and that matters.
When you work with a therapist who shares aspects of your identity, something shifts. You don't have to explain why certain comments sting.
You don't have to justify why representation matters or why you're tired of being the only one. You don't have to perform or code-switch in the one place where you should be able to just breathe.
I offer a range of counseling services designed to meet you where you are. Whether you're looking for short-term support during a difficult transition or long-term therapy to work through trauma and build resilience, I'm here to help.
Virtual Therapy (Telehealth Statewide)
I provide virtual therapy sessions to LGBTQ+ clients across Maryland and Washington DC. Telehealth services make it easy to access affirming care from the comfort of your own home, no matter where you're located. Virtual sessions are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform, and many clients find that meeting online actually helps them feel more relaxed and open.
Therapy Intensives
Sometimes, 50 minutes isn't enough to unpack years of carrying the weight of being othered, navigating identity struggles, or processing trauma from discrimination. If you're ready for deeper work without stretching healing over months, individual therapy intensives offer focused, transformative time to process what you've been holding.
Therapy intensives are extended sessions (typically 3 hours) designed for LGBTQ+ adults who need more than weekly therapy can provide. Whether you're working through coming out trauma, gender dysphoria, relationship challenges, or the emotional toll of minority stress, intensives give you dedicated space to dive deep and leave with a clear path forward.
What makes intensives powerful for LGBTQ+ clients:
Concentrated healing time: Process complex identity work, family rejection, or systemic trauma without waiting weeks between sessions
Tailored to your needs: We'll use evidence-based modalities like EMDR, Internal Family Systems, CBT, and trauma-informed approaches designed for your specific concerns
Personalized treatment plan: You'll receive a written roadmap within 48 hours with concrete strategies you can use immediately
Virtual and private: Conducted via secure telehealth from the comfort of your own home

Evidence-Based Modalities
I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches depending on your individual needs and goals. My approach to therapy is integrative, meaning I pull from different evidence-based modalities to create a treatment plan that works for you. Some of the techniques I use include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helpful for addressing depression, anxiety, and negative thought patterns
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Effective for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal communication
Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT): Specifically designed for individuals dealing with trauma and PTSD
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Focuses on accepting difficult feelings and taking action aligned with your values
Internal Family Systems (IFS): Explores different parts of oneself to promote healing and personal growth

Therapy That Meets You Where You Are
How to Get Started with LGBTQ+ Counseling
Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, especially if you've had negative past experiences or if this is your first time seeking mental health support. Here's what the process looks like when you work with me:
1. Schedule a Complimentary 15-Minute Call
The first step is booking a complimentary 15-minute consultation. This is a no-pressure conversation where we can talk about what's bringing you to therapy, what you're hoping to get out of our sessions, and whether I'm the right therapist for your needs. You can ask me anything—about my approach, my experience working with LGBTQ+ clients, or what a typical session looks like.
This consultation is also an opportunity for you to check in with yourself. Does my energy feel right? Do you feel comfortable talking to me? Trust your gut. Finding the right therapist is one of the most important decisions you can make for your healing journey, and it's okay to take your time.
2. First Session
If we decide to move forward, we'll schedule your first session. During this appointment, we'll dive deeper into what's going on for you. I'll ask questions to get a full picture of your concerns, your goals, and what support you need. We'll also talk about logistics like scheduling, communication between sessions, and what our work together might look like.
First sessions can bring up a lot of feelings. Some clients feel relieved to finally talk about what they've been holding. Others feel nervous or unsure. All of that is normal, and I'll meet you wherever you are.
3. Ongoing Therapy
From there, we'll establish a regular schedule that works for you. Most clients meet weekly, but some prefer biweekly sessions depending on their needs and availability. We'll work together to create a treatment plan that addresses your concerns and helps you build the skills, resilience, and insight you're looking for.
Therapy isn't a quick fix, but it is effective. Research has shown that working with a trained therapist can lead to significant improvements in mental health, relationships, and overall quality of living. My commitment is to provide a warm, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where you can do the hard, beautiful work of becoming more fully yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions About LGBTQ+ Therapy in Maryland
What makes your practice LGBTQ+ affirming?
My practice is affirming because I center your identity as a core part of who you are, not something to be "fixed" or minimized. I have specialized training in working with LGBTQ+ individuals, including those navigating gender dysphoria, coming out, relationship challenges, and the mental health impact of stigma and discrimination. I'm also a member of the LGBTQ community myself, which means I bring both personal and professional knowledge to this work. You won't have to educate me about what it's like to be queer or trans—I already understand, and I'm here to support you.
Do you work with transgender and nonbinary clients?
Yes. I work with transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer, and gender-expansive clients of all kinds. Whether you're exploring your gender identity, considering or undergoing transition, dealing with dysphoria, or simply trying to live authentically in a world that often doesn't make space for you, I'm here to help. I use clients' correct names and pronouns, and I approach gender with the understanding that it's complex, personal, and not something that needs to fit into a binary.
How do I know if you're the right therapist for me?
Finding the right therapist is about more than credentials, t's about fit. During our complimentary consultation, pay attention to how you feel. Do you feel heard? Do I seem like someone you could trust? Does my approach resonate with you? If the answer is yes, we're probably a good match. If not, that's okay too. I can help guide you toward other resources or Maryland therapists who might be a better fit for your needs.
Do you accept insurance?
I don't accept insurance directly, but I do provide superbills that you can submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network benefits, which means they'll reimburse you for a portion of your therapy costs. I'm happy to help you understand your benefits and verify what your plan covers. For clients who need financial support, I also offer a sliding scale for qualifying individuals.
What should I expect in my first session?
Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and for me to understand what's going on for you. I'll ask questions about your history, your current concerns, your goals for therapy, and what kind of support you're looking for. We'll also talk about practical things like scheduling and how we'll communicate between sessions. Some people feel emotional during the first session, and that's completely normal. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready to share—we'll take things at your pace.
Can I do therapy virtually, or do I need to come in person?
All therapy sessions are conducted virtually via secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth. Many clients actually prefer meeting online because it allows them to receive affirming care from the comfort and safety of their own space. You can meet with me from anywhere in Maryland, whether you're in Silver Spring, Baltimore, Rockville, or a smaller community. As long as you're physically located in Maryland at the time of our session, we can work together.
What issues do you specialize in for LGBTQ+ clients?
I specialize in a wide range of concerns that affect LGBTQ+ individuals, including:
Identity exploration and coming out
Gender dysphoria and transition support
Depression and anxiety related to minority stress
Trauma and PTSD from discrimination or violence
Relationship challenges and family dynamics
Grief and loss (including chosen family)
Eating disorders and body image
ADHD and other co-occurring disorders
Career challenges related to workplace discrimination
Life transitions and navigating systems that weren't built for you
How long does therapy take?
That depends on your goals and what you're working on. Some clients come to therapy for a few months to work through a specific issue or transition. Others stay in therapy for years because they find it helpful to have ongoing support as they navigate challenges and continue their personal growth. There's no "right" timeline—it's about what works for you. We'll check in regularly about your progress and adjust our work together based on what you need.
Do you work with couples or just individuals?
I provide both individual therapy and couples therapy. If you're in a relationship and facing challenges around communication, trust, intimacy, or other issues, couples counseling can be a helpful space to work through those concerns together. I also work with polyamorous couples and people in non-traditional relationship structures. All relationship types are welcome here.
What if I'm not sure about my identity yet?
That's completely okay. You don't have to have everything figured out to come to therapy. In fact, therapy is a great place to explore questions about your identity, sexual orientation, or gender without pressure to choose a label or decide anything right away. I'll create a safe, supportive environment where you can try on different ideas, ask questions, and take your time figuring out who you are. There's no rush, and you deserve space to explore without judgment.
Are you accepting new clients right now?
Yes, I'm currently accepting new clients for both individual and couples therapy. If you're interested in working together, the best way to get started is to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation. You can book that appointment directly through my website, call my office, or send me an email. I'll get back to you as quickly as possible to confirm a time that works for you.
What's your cancellation policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Life happens, and I understand that things come up. If you give me advance notice, we can find another time that works for both of us. Late cancellations or no-shows may be charged, so please note that in your scheduling.
