Whether you're navigating workplace micro aggressions, family pressures as an adult second-gen son, or the quiet exhaustion of always being “the strong one”—you deserve a space to exhale.

At Life Migration Therapy, sessions are rooted in cultural understanding and radical care. This isn’t surface-level support or one-size-fits-all advice. This is therapy for the parts of you that rarely get the mic.

Thinking about

Therapy?

Reaching out is often the hardest part. If you're here, something in you is ready, even if the rest of you isn't sure yet.

This form goes directly to Charika. No automated responses, no intake coordinators, just a real person who will read what you've shared and respond with care.

After you submit, Charika typically responds within 1-2 business days to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation. That call is just a conversation. No pressure, no commitment, just a chance to see if this feels like the right fit for you.

Reduced Fee Therapy for Communities in Crisis

african american therapist taking new clients in maryland and washington dc

Whether your family is far from home, you're navigating displacement, or you're exhausted from being the strong one, you deserve space to exhale.

Between climate disasters across the Caribbean, ongoing violence in conflict zones, forced migration, and rising costs, trauma isn't just personal anymore.

It's global.

And it's showing up in our bodies, our relationships, and our ability to just be.

Therapy shouldn't be a luxury reserved for those who can afford it during the hardest moments.

I have limited reduced-fee spots at $160/session for people directly impacted by:

Global crises & displacement – climate disasters, war, political instability, forced migration

Financial hardship – job loss, economic instability, sudden life changes

Migration challenges – resettlement stress, family separation, navigating new systems

Ongoing discrimination – racism, xenophobia, religious persecution, community violence

This isn't charity. It's community care.

When some of us can pay full rate, it makes room for others who can't. If you're struggling, mention it during your consultation. We'll figure it out together.

Healing Looks Different for Everyone.
Here's What It Felt Like for Them.

  • Charika has completely changed my life! I came in not knowing who I was and left feeling the most certain about my identity and what I wanted for my life.

  • I can't express enough how grateful I am for the incredible support and guidance I’ve received from Ms. White. From the very first session, I felt heard, understood, and safe in a way I never expected. The strategies and insights she provided have been truly transformative, helping me work through issues I thought I would never overcome. Not only did she help me see things from new perspectives, but she also gave me the tools I needed to navigate life's challenges with confidence. Ms. White has been a beacon of support, and I am beyond thankful for her professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment to my well-being. Thanks to her expertise, I feel stronger, more self-aware, and better equipped to handle whatever comes my way. I can't recommend her enough!

  • I cannot recommend Ms. White enough. Truly a gifted therapist—mindful, careful, and deeply professional in their approach. What stood out most was their ability to create a safe and non-judgmental space while remaining refreshingly down-to-earth. Every session felt meaningful, and I always leave with new insights and tools to help me grow. Their genuine care and thoughtful guidance have made a lasting impact on my life. Thank you, for all you’ve done!

  • Ms. White is very endearing, charismatic and such a great listener. She truly asks the right questions to help me connect the dots for my therapy. Her vast knowledge and constructive feedback has helped me work on my traumas over the year. In the past, I’ve struggled to connect with other therapists because I am a 1st generation immigrant but Ms White was able to relate to my story because of her immigrant background and her understanding of the cultural challenges I faced. Ms White is kind but she challenges me constantly which I desperately needed in a therapist to really “do the work.”

  • Charika helped me to face my fears, decrease my drinking, and taught me how to sit with the discomforts and navigate in life with the use of healthy coping tools.

  • It's great to work with a therapist who is also from a different. She is warm, knowledgeable and culturally in tune with practices of my country making the sessions feel like I'm with a friend who truly cares.

  • To find a queer, Black immigrant therapist is like finding a unicorn. Charika indeed has been that for me and I cherish the moments we have that allow me to bring all of my true self to our sessions.

care, and culture.

Hi, I’m Charika — a Black woman, a therapist, and someone who believes that healing doesn’t have to mean explaining yourself at every turn. In this space, you don’t have to code-switch, shrink, or wear the mask that society requires of you. I see therapy as a collaborative process rooted in liberation, justice, and self-ownership. My approach is rooted in understanding your culture and lived experiences, and I work in a way that respects your past while helping you move toward where you want to be

You don’t have to carry it all alone.

Whether you’re silently navigating stress from work, unraveling deep-rooted family dynamics, or healing after relationship trauma — you’re not alone, and you don’t have to “just push through it.”

Here are some of the experiences I support clients through:

  • Anxiety, depression & chronic stress

  • Career burnout & work-life imbalance

  • Life transitions & identity development

  • Attachment wounds & relationship struggles

  • Intergenerational trauma & family dynamics

  • Neurodiversity, including ADHD & sensory overwhelm

  • Multicultural concerns & cultural adjustment

  • Systemic oppression, racial identity & decolonization work

  • LGBTQIA+ identity exploration & affirmation

  • Women’s mental health & hormonal shifts (PMDD, postpartum, etc.)

I specialize in a holistic approach working with people who feel like they’re always “doing the most” for everyone else — but struggle to pour into themselves. If you’ve been wondering if it’s finally time to start healing, the answer is yes.

Therapy with me isn’t about “fixing” — it’s about coming home to yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Starting therapy, especially when you’re carrying layers of culture, identity, and lived experience, can bring up a lot of questions. This space is here to offer clarity, ease, and transparency so you can move forward with confidence. Here, you’ll find answers to the most common questions from new clients, from how sessions work to what therapy with me feels like.

Therapy Grounded in Culture, Compassion, and Clarity

At Life Migration Therapy, support isn't one-size-fits-all. Whether you're navigating burnout, reconciling cultural identity, or healing from trauma, you deserve care that reflects your lived experience. I offer personalized, evidence-based therapy with a strong foundation in cultural humility, anti-oppression values, and mental wellness tailored for Black women, queer folks, immigrants, and first and second-gen professionals.

Sessions are conducted virtually across Maryland and Washington, DC, providing flexible access no matter where you are in your journey.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, depression anxiety, angry, or disconnected from yourself? I get it—it’s not always easy to put those emotions into words, especially when the world around you makes it harder to breathe. The weight of your experiences, shaped by systems that overlook and harm you, can leave you feeling lost. But you don’t have to carry it alone. I’m here to walk with you in a safe space through those challenges, providing support as you heal and reclaim your sense of self.

Why don’t I take insurance?

I don’t take insurance because it often creates barriers for vulnerable communities, including people of color, immigrants and LGBTQ+ community. Insurance companies require diagnoses for coverage, which can be used against individuals in legal, employment, or immigration matters. Many people in these communities are also misdiagnosed or denied care due to systemic biases. By not accepting insurance, I ensure that therapy remains a safe, judgment-free space where healing isn’t dictated by rigid policies or profit-driven systems.

While I don’t accept insurance directly, many clients use their out-of-network benefits to get reimbursed for sessions. I provide a superbill (a detailed receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company. Depending on your plan, they may cover a portion of the cost.

We've partnered with Mentaya, a service that streamlines getting reimbursed for your therapy sessions through out-of-network benefits.

Mentaya is perfect if you:

• Have out-of-network benefits

• Feel overwhelmed by superbills and insurance

• Have submitted superbills but failed to get any reimbursement

• Simply want to skip the hassle of paperwork!

Here's how it works:

1. Sign up for Mentaya here

2. Our practice will enter your sessions into the platform.

3. Mentaya submits the claim and handles any insurance follow-up.

4. You get reimbursed by insurance!

Mentaya charges a 5% fee per claim, which includes handling any paperwork required, dealing with denials, and calling insurance companies.

It's risk-free: They guarantee claims are successfully submitted, or a full refund of their fees.
