How payment and reimbursement work.
Life Migration Therapy is an out-of-network, self-pay practice. Insurance never dictates the shape of your care here, and the Mentaya route exists for insurance reimbursement when your plan cooperates. The costs live in the open so you can decide whether this fits your budget before you ever schedule a call.
- ✓No in-network billing. You pay at the time of service
- ✓Superbills provided for psychotherapy, so out-of-network benefits can reimburse part of the cost
- ✓Mentaya partnership files claims for you: 5% fee per claim, fully refunded if they can’t submit it
- ✓Limited reduced-fee psychotherapy spots, allocated case by case
- ✓No superbill or reduced fee for ADHD or immigration evaluations
- ✓Telehealth only, across Maryland and Washington, DC
Every number is spelled out on the self-pay fees page, and the affordable therapy options page covers the reduced-fee path in detail.
- Sign up once. Charika’s Mentaya invite link connects your plan.
- Sessions get entered into the platform by the practice.
- Mentaya files the claim and handles denials and insurance follow-up calls.
- You get reimbursed by your insurer, based on your out-of-network benefits.
Why doesn’t Charika take insurance?
Insurance often creates barriers for the very communities this practice exists for: people of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ adults. Coverage requires a mental health diagnosis, and a diagnosis can follow you into legal, employment, or immigration matters. Many people in these communities are also misdiagnosed, or denied care outright, because of systemic bias.
Staying out of network keeps therapy a safe, judgment-free space where your healing isn’t dictated by rigid policies or profit-driven systems. You and Charika decide what the work looks like. Nobody else gets a vote.
Many clients still use out-of-network benefits to get a portion reimbursed, through the superbill or Mentaya. Insurance reimbursement varies by plan, so check your out-of-network mental health benefits before counting on a specific number. Cost is a real consideration, and it deserves a real answer, which is why it’s all on this page instead of behind a phone call.
When the hardest moment and the highest cost collide.
Climate disasters in the Caribbean, forced migration, rising costs: trauma isn’t only personal. It shows up in our bodies, our relationships, and our ability to simply be. Therapy shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for the easiest seasons of your life.
Charika holds limited reduced-fee spots for people directly affected by global crises and displacement, financial hardship, migration challenges, and ongoing discrimination. When some of us can pay full rate, it makes room for others in the community who can’t. If you’re struggling, mention it during your consultation and you’ll figure it out together. Healing belongs to the whole community, not only to whoever can afford it this month.

Google reviewTo find a queer, Black immigrant therapist is like finding a unicorn. Charika indeed has been that for me and I cherish the moments we have that allow me to bring all of my true self to our sessions.
Virtual across Maryland and Washington, DC.
There’s no office and no commute. Sessions happen over secure video from wherever you are: your apartment in Petworth, your parked car on a lunch break in Silver Spring, a quiet room in Baltimore. If you live in Maryland or Washington, DC, this practice can see you, and first contact costs nothing.
Hours run Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM ET. Culturally grounded therapy and mental health care, delivered where your actual life happens, with the identity, family, and career weight you carry treated as context that shapes the work.
Not sure where to start? Individual therapy is the widest door: culturally grounded therapy for anxiety, depression, burnout, and identity, with healing that never asks you to leave your story outside. The individual therapy page covers what sessions look like, and Charika’s story shows the Black therapist behind the practice. Every path starts with the same free call.
Contact questions, answered.
How quickly will I hear back?
Charika typically responds within 1 to 2 business days of your contact. Your message goes directly to her, and she reads every one herself before reaching out to schedule your complimentary 15-minute consultation.
What happens after I reach out?
You’ll get a reply to schedule a free 15-minute call. That call is a conversation about what you need and whether the fit feels right. If it does, you book your first session from there. If it doesn’t, that’s okay too, and Charika can point you toward other culturally responsive therapists.
Do you take insurance?
No. Life Migration Therapy is a self-pay practice, because insurance requirements often create barriers for the communities Charika serves. A superbill is available for psychotherapy sessions, and the Mentaya partnership can file out-of-network claims for you for a 5% fee per claim.
Where can I see a therapist through this practice?
Charika is licensed in Maryland and Washington, DC, and every session happens by secure telehealth. If you live in either place, you can work with her from wherever you feel most comfortable. Outside those two, she can’t legally provide therapy, though she may be able to point you toward someone who can.
Are reduced-fee spots available?
A limited number of reduced-fee psychotherapy spots exist, allocated case by case based on availability. They are for people navigating financial hardship, displacement, or crisis. If cost is the barrier, say so during your consultation and you’ll figure it out together.
Can I skip the form and book directly?
Yes. The booking link goes straight to Charika’s calendar for a complimentary 15-minute consultation. You can also contact the practice by phone or text at 301-244-8219 during business hours, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM ET, and start therapy from whichever door you came through.
Own your happiness and prioritize your peace.
One call with a therapist who gets it, and you’ll know whether therapy here feels like the right fit. Come exactly as you are.
