LGBTQ Therapist DC

gay therapist in washington dc for self esteem and affirmative therapy does not accept insurance but works with unique needs

Find an LGBTQ Therapist in DC Who Sees All of You

Telehealth therapy for queer, trans, and questioning adults across Washington DC and Maryland. You shouldn't have to translate your life before you can start healing. At Life Migration Therapy, you don't.

What would

it feel like to

stop explaining yourself?

Maybe you've sat across from a well-meaning therapist and spent half the session teaching them. Explaining your pronouns. Explaining why coming out to your family is complicated. Explaining what it costs to be the only queer person in the room at work. By the time they caught up, the hour was gone, and so was the part of you that needed care.

Or maybe you've been the strong one for so long, at home, at work, inside your own circles, that you've forgotten what it feels like to be held instead of relied on. A lot of queer and trans people carry that quietly. The exhaustion of code-switching. The low hum of minority stress that never quite shuts off. The particular challenges of being queer or trans in spaces that weren't built for you, hauled through daily life like a second job.

You deserve an LGBTQ therapist who already gets it, so the work can start with you, not with a lesson.

What is LGBTQ affirming therapy?

LGBTQ affirming therapy is care that treats your sexual orientation and gender identity as healthy, whole parts of who you are, never as the problem to be fixed.

It isn't a single technique.

It's a stance that shapes every conversation, so your identity becomes the context for your healing instead of the thing on trial.

Affirmative therapy is different from a profile that simply reads "LGBTQ friendly."

Friendly means you're welcome. Affirming means your therapist understands the specific ways identity, family, faith, culture, and community shape your mental health, and brings that understanding into the room without being asked. For many queer individuals, that difference is what finally makes therapy feel safe.

Who you'll actually be working with

I'm Charika White, a licensed clinical social worker (LICSW in Washington DC, LCSW-C in Maryland) and the therapist behind Life Migration Therapy. As a queer Black immigrant woman from the Caribbean, I know what it means to move through spaces that weren't designed for you, and to build a life on your own terms anyway, grounded in dignity and social justice. That lived experience sits beside my clinical training in every session.

Because this is a private practice and not a large group, you won't be passed around a rotating team or matched with whoever happens to be free. You work with me, consistently. I especially enjoy working with queer and trans clients navigating the unique challenges of being fully themselves, and that continuity is often where the deeper, lasting change actually happens.

When your therapist shares some of your lived experience, you spend less time explaining and more time becoming.

What we can work on together

Your identity might be the center of the work, or just the backdrop

Both are welcome here. We focus on what feels loudest and let the rest unfold at your pace.

Anxiety, depression, burnout

The heaviness that won't lift on its own.

The coming out process

Navigating outness and finding the queer community.

Gender identity

Exploring gender and gender affirming care, at your pace.

Discrimination and being unseen

The daily toll of moving through unwelcoming spaces.

Relationships and family

Relationship issues and family dynamics that feel stuck.

Self esteem and self compassion

Working through shame, perfectionism, and harsh self-talk.

Complex trauma and grief

Tending to past experiences and the losses you carry.

Life transitions

Finding your footing through change and isolation.

Every approach I draw from, like CBT, ACT, IFS, and DBT, is evidence-based and adapted to your unique needs, not the other way around.

What to expect

What does affirming care actually include?

Affirming care starts with a therapist who understands queer and trans experience, a pace you set, and a space where your identity is never the thing being treated. Here is what that tends to look like in practice.

1

A free consultation

We start with a no-pressure call to see if we're a good fit, either way.

2

Your story first

Early sessions focus on understanding you and what you want to feel differently.

3

Collaborative work

The work stays person-centered, drawing on your strengths, not just your struggles.

4

Lasting change

Over time we build confidence, boundaries, and new ways toward a more fulfilling life.

You don't need to have your identity figured out to begin. You don't need to be out to anyone. You only need to be curious about feeling more like yourself.

Healing here doesn't mean becoming someone new. It means coming home to who you already are.

Care that's built to be reachable

Cost keeps too many people from the support they deserve, especially in our communities. That's why Life Migration Therapy uses the Green Bottle Fee Model, a set of community-based tiers so you can choose the rate that honestly fits your situation. Your well being shouldn't depend on hiding your need.

The Green Bottle Fee Model

Tier 1

Community Care

For when budget is the biggest barrier. The most accessible rate, held open for those who need it most.

Tier 2

Sustainability

The standard rate that keeps the practice steady and the doors open for everyone who walks through them.

Tier 3

Solidarity

For those with more room to give, helping sustain accessible care for the wider community.

I don't accept insurance directly, because billing it often forces vulnerable communities to squeeze their care into someone else's boxes. I can provide a superbill, a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement. Sessions are fully virtual, so therapy fits your life and your privacy stays yours. Clients have left 5-star feedback about finally feeling seen here, which is the part that matters most to me.

How do you find an affirming therapist who gets it?

Look past the label. Plenty of mental health professionals list themselves as affirming, but the word only means something when it comes with real understanding, the kind built on specialized training and lived experience.

  • Ask whether a therapist has experience working with the LGBTQ community and the mental health issues queer people often face.

  • Ask whether they treat your sexual orientation as healthy.

  • Ask whether you'd have to teach them the basics before you could reach the actual work.

Some therapists specialize in narrow areas, so it's fair to ask about your specific challenges too. A good fit, though, is the single biggest predictor of whether therapy helps. Whether you're looking for a queer therapist, a gay therapist, or simply an affirming therapist who honors your unique experiences, the right one makes space for all of you, the queer or trans person, the professional, the family member, the whole human, without asking you to leave any part at the door.

Thinking about

Therapy?

Reaching out is often the hardest part. If you're here, something in you is ready, even if the rest of you isn't sure yet.

This form goes directly to Charika. No automated responses, no intake coordinators, just a real person who will read what you've shared and respond with care.

After you submit, Charika typically responds within 1-2 business days to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation. That call is just a conversation. No pressure, no commitment, just a chance to see if this feels like the right fit for you.

If you have questions before filling this out, you're also welcome to schedule a consultation directly through the booking link below

Serving Washington DC and Maryland, wherever you are

Life Migration Therapy is a fully virtual practice serving queer and trans adults throughout the DC area and across Maryland, from young adults to folks well into their careers. Whether you're in the heart of Washington DC, the suburbs, or a corner of Maryland where affirming mental health services are hard to find, telehealth brings care to you. No commute, no waiting room, no chance of running into someone you know.

Sessions are held by secure video, on your schedule, from wherever you feel safe. For many gay men, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and nonbinary clients, that privacy is part of what makes reaching out finally feel possible.

A few things to know before we begin

Do you take insurance for LGBTQ therapy?
I don't bill insurance directly. I offer community-based pricing through the Green Bottle Fee Model, and I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

How much does therapy cost, and is there accessible pricing?
Pricing follows three community tiers, Community Care, Sustainability, and Solidarity, so you can select the rate that fits your situation. We talk through the options in your consultation, so cost is clear before you commit to anything.

Do I have to live in Washington DC to work with you?
You need to be located in Washington DC or Maryland during sessions, since that's where I'm licensed. Beyond that, you can join from home, your office, or anywhere private, because all therapy is virtual.

Is everything I share confidential, even about being out?
Yes. What you share stays between us, including anything about your sexual orientation, gender identity, or who knows what in your life. Being out can look different in different contexts, and I won't make assumptions on your behalf.

What's the difference between LGBTQ-friendly and LGBTQ-affirming therapy?
Friendly means you're welcome; affirming means your therapist actively understands queer and trans experience and treats your identity as a strength. Affirming care is built on that understanding, so you spend less energy explaining and more on healing.

Do I need to have my identity figured out before I start?
No. Many clients come in still exploring who they are, and that's a valid place to begin. Therapy can be part of your identity development, not a reward for having finished it.

What happens in the free 15-minute consultation?
We have a short, low-pressure conversation about what's bringing you in and what you're hoping for. You can ask me anything, get a feel for how I work, and decide whether it feels right, with no obligation to book ongoing sessions.

Do you offer couples therapy for same-sex partners?
I focus on individual therapy, so I don't offer couples therapy. If couples work is what you need, I'm glad to point you toward affirming clinicians who specialize in it, so you land somewhere that truly fits.

What do you help with besides identity?
Plenty. Anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, relationship concerns, and the bigger life changes that knock you off balance are all common mental health concerns clients bring. Your identity might be central to the work, or simply part of the picture.

How do I know if you're the right fit for me?
Honestly, you'll feel it in our first conversation. A strong therapeutic fit matters more than any single credential, which is exactly why the consultation is free and no-pressure.

What therapy approaches do you use?
I draw from evidence-based and relational approaches, including CBT, ACT, IFS, and DBT, and adapt them to you. The work stays collaborative rather than one-size-fits-all.

Can I start therapy if I'm not out yet?
Absolutely. You don't have to be out to anyone, including yourself, to begin. This is a safe space to explore at your own pace and decide what feels right for you.

Do you work with transgender and nonbinary clients?
Yes. I welcome transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive adults, and I support clients navigating gender identity and the decisions that come with affirming who they are.
